The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was the biggest multi-sport event in the UK for over a decade. We worked alongside Mediacom and Bearded Kitten to develop an interactive cycling experience which drew in crowds and donated books to local schools.
The experience was designed, programmed and engineered by 3axis, which I co-led.

The experience featured 9 bikes in 3 pods, including an accessbility-friendly version, with a seperate interactive penny drop machine rewarding players for participating. The weeklong event was attended by Chris Hoy - 9 x Gold medal Olympic cyclist - and thousands of others.

One of the biggest challenges was bridging the physical and digital elements. We connected each bike to an Arduino, allowing real-world pedalling to control progress in a custom-built game engine. Syncing these inputs in real time across three bikes meant solving latency and stability issues while maintaining an intuitive and engaging user experience. The end result was a responsive, high-energy activation that blended engineering, game design, and large-scale public engagement to deliver a unique experience.
